  우리 여행은 대부분 길 위에 있었다. 호화로운 도시의 불빛은 지나치는 경우가 많았고, 소박한 불빛을 찾아 노래를 불렀다. 숙소의 선택 기준은 늘 가장 싼 방이었고, 대부분 숙소에 가지 않고 길 위에서 잠이 들었다. 그래서 우리 여행은 미국이라는 나라를 향해 떠난 게 아니라 미국의 도로를 향해 떠난 건지도 모른다는 생각이 들었다. 마지막 날 몬탁에 도착하자 우리의 집처럼 항상 앞에 있어주던 도로는 더 이상 이어지지 않았다. 그곳에는 등대와 바다뿐이었다. 여전히 달려야만 할 것 같던 우리에게 손을 내밀어 준 건 바다였고, 등대는 이 여행의 끝이 새로운 시작이라고 말해준 것 같다. 바다를 바라보고 있는 벤치가 있었다. 그곳에 나란히 앉은 4명의 여행자는 각자 다른 생각에 잠겼던 것 같다. 나는 그때 혼자 끄적거렸던 것들 중에 ‘파란 눈동자’라는 말을 골라서 노래를 썼다.
